Opioid-related fatalities are surging, but what if there was a future without them?

Globally, over 70% of drug-related deaths involve opioids, and an estimated 69,000 people die from opioid overdose each year, the World Health Organization reports. Administering naloxone can reverse the effects of overdose. While access to naloxone is typically limited to health professionals, some countries have made it available over the counter, including the U.S. this year. More hope comes with news of a fentanyl vaccine created to block the high and prevent relapse. Developed by University of Houston researchers, the vaccine could go to market around 2025. Milestones like these are critical to saving lives.
